This pictorial history is only the second of its kind to trace the 30-plus-year history of Amtrak, beginning with a look at the rise amtrak downeaster and fall of privately run passenger train service followed by a look at Amtrak's infant stage from 1971 through 1976. Downeaster - The Downeaster is a 116-mile (187 km) passenger train line operated by Amtrak, connecting North Station in Boston, Massachusetts to Portland, Maine. No direct transfer exists in Boston (see North-South Rail Link); passengers connecting to other Amtrak service south or west from Boston should use the MBTA Orange Line subway to Back Bay Station or a taxi to South Station.

Durham-UNH (Amtrak station) - The railroad station in Durham, New Hampshire serves the Amtrak Downeaster and is situated west of downtown Durham on the campus of the University of New Hampshire (UNH). The station was originally built in 1896 in Lynn, Massachusetts and was moved to the present site in Durham when the Boston and Maine Railroad moved its tracks further from the center of campus.

North-South Rail Link - The North-South Rail Link is a plan for a passenger railroad tunnel in Boston, Massachusetts to connect South Station to North Station. Currently, all passengers traveling between the two sides of the MBTA commuter rail system, or to Amtrak's Downeaster, must use local inner-city transit or take a taxi:
